In My Mailbox (14): Mother’s Day and a Long Hiatus

Before anything else!

Happy Mother’s Day to all moms out there! :)

Especially to mine:

<3Thank you for getting me all those books when I was a kid even if you’re not too fond of reading, and I know sometimes you think I read too much. :D  Thank you for reading all the things I wrote despite that fact. :) I love you!

* * *

It’s been a long time since I last did an In My Mailbox post. Other than laziness and trying to resist buying books, I went on a book-buying fast during the Lenten season. I could not buy books for myself, but I can buy them as gifts, or receive them as gifts since my birthday falls within Lent. It’s all good, and I ended up using the usual book money for other equally important things, like clothes.

But as soon as Easter morning came, I went to Book Depository and ordered books. :) It felt nice, to celebrate victory in that way. The books aren’t here yet, though, so that will be for another posts.

The books I bought in recent bookstore trips are a different matter. And so after a long hiatus, here’s my 14th In My Mailbox. In My Mailbox is a weekly book meme hosted by Kristi from The Story Siren, where bloggers post about what books received that week, be it via  mailbox, library or store.

In My Mailbox (14)

  1. What My Mother Doesn’t Know by Sonya Sones (Fully Booked Shang) – got this yesterday on a whim, choosing this over another contemporary book because I remember seeing a good review of this book from Angie. Curiosity again, plus it’s a novel in verse, so it should be a quick read. :)
  2. The Boyfriend Listby E. Lockhart (Fully Booked Shang) – So many good reviews for this, but I haven’t bought it because it’s a series and I didn’t want to invest on a series. I don’t know what made me buy this yesterday, though, but I guess if everyone says it’s good, it’s worth the try. :D
  3. Where She Went by Gayle Foreman (NBS Eastwood)- This one came out in the middle of my fast, and I remember not pre-ordering this for Kindle because I said I wanted to have both print copies because it would look good on my shelf. On a trip to Fully Booked during Lent while researching for my first Female Network book list, I saw this book, and I really, really wanted to get it already. I didn’t, but when I went back for it after Holy Week, it was gone. :( Thanks to Kai, though, for telling me there were copies in National Bookstore. :)
  4. Looking for Alibrandi by Melina Marchetta (Fully Booked Eastwood) – On a mission to get all Marchetta books, I got this one on the first Monday of Easter. I don’t think I need to explain why. :P
  5. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer (Fully Booked Shang) – I wasn’t planning to get this anytime soon. I’ve heard lots of good things about this book, but I never really thought I’d be interested in it until it kept on coming up on Tumblr. So I finally bit the bullet and got this one yesterday. People are saying I won’t regret this one — let’s see? :)

And I must not forget the books I got for my birthday (which has no picture because it’s kind of hard digging them from my TBR shelf. Sorry!):

  • Angelica's DaughtersThe Spell Book of Listen Taylor by Jaclyn Moriarty from Kai
  • Confessions of A Serial Kisser by Wendelin Van Draanen from Aaron
  • Angelica’s Daughters by Various Authors from Ariel
  • What I Talk About When I Talk About Running by Haruki Murakami from Ranee

And books I got from the recent Goodreads Anniversary Meetup:

  • Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen from Kwesi
  • News of the Shaman by Karl de Mesa from book swap, given by Emir

He's So Not Worth ItAnd review ebooks:

  • He’s So Not Worth It by Kieran Scott from Simon & Schuster Galley Grab
  • Treasure Me by Christine Nolfi from the author

I just realized that almost all of the books are contemporary. Aha. I think I’m going back to my roots. :P

So it’s been a pretty good book…period. I’ve got some new releases I’m waiting for this month (What Happened to Goodbye! Magic Slays! Deadline!), plus some books I’m interested in getting because of the good reviews I’m seeing (Divergent!).

Oh, another thing. Dropped by Powerbooks in Shang yesterday, and I had to stop myself from getting some of the new hardbound books they have. One book made it really hard for me — they have Sara Bennett Wealer’s Rival! :o And I thought I’d have to settle for the ebook! Argh, but I had to resist, because it’s not yet payday and I already splurged too much yesterday. So yeah. It can still wait. *twiddles thumbs*

So, there. I’ve rambled enough on this IMM post. :) Maybe next week again? Or at least, when my Book Depository packages arrive. They’re good ones, I tell you. Good ones! :)

  1. i really enjoyed WHAT MY MOTHER DOESN’T KNOW :) I think you’ll love it ~ it is a quick and sunny read :D

i am impressed about your book buying ~ i haven’t bought a book for a long time (but i still own 18 books i haven’t read yet… (some i have had for a while and really should prioritise but i keep going ot the library and reading other stuff :)

i recently read THE BOYFRIEND LIST and liked the writing but i didn’t love it enough to keep or read more of the series…

hope you enjoy your books and looking forward to what you think of HE’S SO NOT WORTH IT ~ the 1st one was a guilty pleasure of mine last year

hope you had an awesome mother’s day with your family

    • Oooh good then. Sunny reads to match the sunny weather. Or, to match the rains since there’s a typhoon here.

I wouldn’t buy as many books if we had a great library system here. The only libraries I know of here are in school, and our national library is more for archives than actual books. Ah well. That’s why I settle for buying books instead of just borrowing. Oh to have a library here — I bet I’d save lots. :)

I loved SHE’S SO DEAD TO US. It’s one of the contemporary reads I really enjoyed last year. Thank goodness for S&S Galley Grab for the free e-ARC.

And happy mother’s day to you Nomes! :)

  2. awesome books! i LOVED where she went and i hope you do too. enjoy all you reads :)

  6. OH, I love Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close! I can’t to hear what you think of it. Such a moving book.

    • Everyone’s posting quotes from this on Tumblr. I read the first few pages and it seemed very interesting, plus I love that it had pictures and the blank pages and the red marks. Very interesting. I’ll have to bump this up my TBR sometime soon. :)

  7. Didn’t Kieran Scott use to write for the Love Stories series? :)

Sorry, I couldn’t comment much on your haul. The authors are not familiar, heehee. But I hope you enjoy each and every book! ;)

    • I think she did! I haven’t read any Love Stories books, though. I was really more of a Sweet Valley kid. Hehe.

Only Marchetta should be familiar to you, but you haven’t read her books yet, so I’ll wait for you to do so. Jellicoe Road! =D

  8. You have a lot of good looking books. I hope you won’t be disappointed by those that came highly recommended and you finally purchased or agreed to review. Happy Reading!
