In My Mailbox (18): MIBF (or, okay, not really)

It’s been a very bookish week since I arrived from Europe, and I am definitely not complaining. This week was special for Filipino readers because The First Filipino Reader Conference happened last Wednesday, and it was also the 32nd Manila International Book Fair (it’s still happening at SMX now, so if you haven’t been there, you still have time!). If you missed the ReaderCon, you can read what happened at the @PinoyReaderCon twitter (tweeted by yours truly :) ).

However, despite my two-day attendance at the Book Fair (the most I’ve did since I started attending), I did not get any book from the fair itself! I was supposed to, but I was terribly late yesterday and I was just too tired to look for a book (or beads for jewelry making), and most of what I wanted was gone. So this week’s (and last week, actually) stash includes some books I got from Book Depository, a book I borrowed and a book I bought during but outside the Book Fair. :P

The loot

Oh, and a lot of bookmarks, too, from the ReaderCon.

Anyway, the books:

The books

  1. A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin – yes, I’m jumping into the bandwagon. I got this from National Bookstore in Mall of Asia. I wanted to get the boxed set, but I ran out of them in the Book Fair. I was supposed to get all four books, but man, they’re thick. So I decided to get just the first book for now and I’ll decide later on if I want the others. Again: man, this book is thick. 835 pages!
  2. Six Impossible Things by Fiona Wood – borrowed from Chachic! And her personal Aussie library book tour continues. :)
  3. A Conspiracy of Kings by Megan Whalen Turner – yay paperback! And thanks, Book Depository. :) I had this pre-ordered a few weeks back.
  4. Finnikin of the Rock by Melina Marchetta – pre-ordered this from Book Depository a few months back, too. :) Thanks to Nomes for the heads up of the paperback edition. Plus, I heard its sequel is coming out soon, so I should bump this up my TBR. :)

Oh, and I also got my blog business cards, which I had printed in a rush just for the ReaderCon. Features Steve Emond‘s drawing, and designed by my lovely friend Jana from Jana Styles. :)

Blog business card!

Talk about taking all the book blogging thing seriously. But hey, this is good for networking, and making friends. :)

I remember those days when I’d go crazy during Book Fair season, but I think I’ve mellowed out. That, and after paying for some Europe bills, I need to be more prudent with my book spending. That, and I really still have too many books in my TBR pile, and I really want to whittle it down further. Is this me maturing as a book hoarder? Gasp.

What did you get in your mailbox this week? :)

  1. I got a stack of books from the fair. Posting about it soon. :) Let us know how goes A Game of Thrones for you. Might follow suit. (Ugh, 800+ pages?!)

  2. LOL at the personal Aussie book tour. I only have three that aren’t with me right now – Graffiti Moon, Six Impossible Things and Raw Blue. I think Graffiti Moon has been passed on the most number of times. :P

Yay for Conspiracy! Hope you enjoy reading that. Haven’t read Finnikin either. I’ve seen the hardcover in local bookstores but didn’t know that the paperback is now available.

    • Nomes told me about the paperback release in Book Depository, so I used that to bribe myself to finish something. LOL. It’s kind of an odd-sized paperback, though.

Can’t wait to read Conspiracy! I miss Gen already. :D

  3. Hi, Tina! Thanks for the live tweets at the ReaderCon! I’m not active at Twitter at all, and it’s only now that I’m reading your tweets. Galing!

  4. I’ve been wanting to check out the show & read the book.. I started watching the show this morning but couldn’t get into it..

    Enjoy the conference!

    • They said the show will help in imagining the book. I have yet to find out, though. All my friends say the books are very engaging. :)

      Thanks for the visit!

  5. Awesome stuff you got! Enjoy!

  6. Looks like you had a nice Mailbox this week. I hope that you enjoy your books. Check out what I gotIn My Mailbox this week.

  7. Six Impossible Things I keep meaning to buy and I never do… :) I loved Game of Thrones as a tv show and I’ve started reading the books, but I’m not sure if I ever will get through them all, lol.

    • I think all the YA reading is making me shirk from reading thick books. :P But I will power through GoT once I’m ready, since everyone in my book club is making me read it. =D

I’ve heard so many good things with Six Impossible Things! :) I’m so excited to read it.

  8. When I grow up, I want to be like you. Great selection this week! Check out mine!

  9. YAY for A Game of Thrones!!! :D

The thickest (fiction) book I’ve read, by far, is still The Pillars of the Earth. More or less a thousand pages, in paperback format, with suuuuper-small fonts and thin margins. Ouch for the eyes. :(

    • The Pillars of the Earth is also in my should-acquire and must-read list, after everyone’s been raving about it. But OMG, the third book in A Song of Ice and Fire is 1100+ pages. o_O I’m going to take time with this, haha.

  10. I feel like a loser. I didn’t get anything. Ugh.

  11. Sounds like you had a fabulous time at reader con! I’m a little jealous. Okay, not a little. A lot.

Dang that’s some Aussie goodness going on right there. I’ve read neither (but I love Six’s cover!) — hope you enjoy them.

    • Book events are always fun. :-) Maybe next time that happens you’ll be around? Haha. Let’s hope so!

There is something in the water in Australia — their YA fiction (especially contemporary) is awesome (and I’m mentally saying that with their accent :D).

  12. your business cards look completely awesome <3

and i think you will LOVE finnikin :)

  13. Tina, hope you enjoy Game of Thrones. I didn’t even feel the thickness of that first book!

I started Clash of Kings but I’ve had to put it down for some more pressing reading, and for watching the series (three episodes down), but I hope I can pick it up again (and the rest of the series) before the year ends.

I want to upgrade my mmp (unfortunately the tie-in) of GOT, but there are no options available here. Sana they get a trade paperback or hardcover boxed set around the holidays!

    • If I get to finish GoT this year, this would be the thickest book I’ve read since…Breaking Dawn (ugh). I realize that I haven’t really read many chunkster books after BD. I’m actually excited because everyone else said it’s very engaging. :)

  14. It’s been YEARS since I last attended the MIBF. After reading your post, I decided to make a promise to bring myself and my family to the fair next year. Wala ng excuses (well, unless there’s BAGYO! Hehe)
