Required Reading: July

Hello, July! Hello second half of the year! :)

I owe several reviews on this blog but I’m sort of pressed for time with work and other things recently, so reviewing has kind of taken a back seat. I figure a post should suffice now so you know I’m still alive, and I’m not off doing some funeral planning checklist or you know, not reading. I am, I’m just terribly slow! But right now I just happened to be caught in the rain and waiting for it to stop so I can go to work, so I had the time to squeeze in a quick blog entry. Then I remembered that I haven’t made a Required Reading post yet and it’s already the 3rd day of the new month. So here we go!

From the quite dismal reading month that is May, I had a pretty good reading month for June! And I’m particularly proud of this June accomplishment because the two books from my list aren’t exactly the easiest books to read. So yay, recap!

  • A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin (4/5)
  • Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien (5/5)
  • The Extraordinary Secrets of April, May and June by Robin Benway (3/5)

Plus, I managed to quit being lazy and interviewed Maria for my What I Read post. So even if I didn’t really have an active reviewing month, I think had a pretty good reading and blogging month. :)

Required Reading: July

I’m not quite sure what I’m going to put for my list in July, actually. I had a list made up and this was supposed to be the month where I get back on my series/trilogy books…but when I saw that most of them were fantasy books again…I had to take a break. I think I have had enough fantasy last month (not that I regret it, of course). So there’s no real theme in this month’s books, just some books that I thought I should start reading because they caught my eye.

Books for July

  • Blackout (Newsflesh # 3) by Mira Grant – this has been on my TBR far too long, and I’m actually quite surprised that I haven’t broken down while I wait to read it. The conclusion of my most favorite series is in my hands people! I’m reading this with my book club friends, too! :)
  • When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead – I got this book recently and I’ve been meaning to read it for a while now after all the good reviews and mystery that it has. It’s pretty thin, so I hope it’s a quick read, too.
  • The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro – Our book club’s book of the month, which we will discuss at the end of July. Lots of interesting plans for this discussion, too! I had an awesome time with Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go, so I’m looking forward to this, too.
  • Honey, Baby, Sweetheart by Deb Caletti – Yay a contemporary! I’ve had some Deb Caletti books on my TBR for a while now, but this one is her best, apparently, evidenced by the silver medal on its cover. I’m quite excited to read this. :)

I think I have a pretty good mix here, and I hope I get to read them all. :) And also, just to throw in another challenge — I will try to catch up on all reviews this month, too! :)

How about you, what are you planning to read this July? :)

9 Thoughts on “Required Reading: July

  1. Of course, I HAVE to reread The Remains of the Day. I hope you enjoy it (and please bear with the old butler talking). :D

  2. Hey Tina! I got two Contemporary YA’s: Before I Fall and Why we Broke Up as gifts so I have those lined up for July if things don’t get busy. :) And I think I’ll add Deb Caletti on my list of Contemporary YA authors to explore.

    • Oooh I loved Before I Fall. I’m curious about Why We Broke Up, mostly because of the illustrations inside. :)

  3. I would love to read Remains of the Day this month too but I have to wait until I have read Never Let Me Go. I hear the latter is the best Ishiguro novel to start first. ;)

Here’s my July list, which I chose on a whim too: http://lynaireads.luigiandlynai.net/2012/07/required-reading-july/
