Teaser Tuesday: Take Me There by Susane Colasanti

I thought I’d take a break from all the fantasy reads since I’m currently ahead anyway, so I’m now back to reading some contemporary YA, to sort of cleanse the reading palate and get me ready for more fantasy reads ahead.

Yes, I know that was one long (run-on?) sentence. But for now: whatever. The book I’m reading now doesn’t seem to like long sentences, so I’m going for that as some kind of offset.

This week’s Teaser Tuesday comes from Take Me There by Susane Colasanti.

Take Me There by Susane Colasanti

Rhiannon is completely devastated after the breakup with her boyfriend. She wants him back.Nicole’s ex still wants to be with her, but she’s obsessed with someone else.

James is hopelessly in love with Rhiannon, who doesn’t see that their friendship can be so much more.

Will their desire to take a mean girl down a notch bring these three friends what they want . . . and more?

Set during one life-altering week and told in three realistic perspectives, this engaging, witty novel shows the ups and downs of love, friendship, and karma.

Honestly? It’s taking me a bit to absorb this story. I’ve read When It Happens by the same author and I wasn’t really that impressed, but I thought I’d give her another chance this time, in hopes of being surprised (like how I was with Elizabeth Scott‘s Stealing Heaven). So far, I’ve got two reactions:

  • These kids are supposed to be in high school — do they really talk that way?
  • What is the point of this story?

It wasn’t until about page 100 that finally something made sense. I’m still skeptical if I will like this story (I mean, why take a third of the book before something finally connects?), but I will try to finish this in hopes of something changing my mind at some point.

I think I’m being mean now, but I will stop because that’s supposed to be for reviews. I will give this book a chance, I will give this book a chance.

Where was I? Oh, the teaser:

So I’m like, “But you are hurting her.”

And he’s all, “That’s not my fault.”

And I’m like, “Well then whose fault is it?”

Hm. I’ll reserve all other opinions when I’m done. But for now…yep, I’ll give this book a chance.

Teaser Tuesday: Rampant by Diana Peterfreund

I’ve been seeing this book for a while, but I never really picked it up until I finally read the blurb last weekend. I didn’t think this is interesting since…well, I didn’t really know the author (yeah, I judge books unfairly sometimes), but this book had me at these two words:

KILLER UNICORNS.

I got the same feeling right whenever I read zombies.

Seriously, read this:

Rampant by Diana PeterfreundRampantby Diana Peterfreund

Forget everything you ever knew about unicorns…

The sparkly, innocent creatures of lore are a myth. Real unicorns are venomous, man-eating monsters with huge fangs and razor-sharp horns. And they can only be killed by virgin descendants of Alexander the Great.

Fortunately, unicorns have been extinct for a hundred and fifty years.

Or not.

Astrid Llewelyn has always scoffed ather eccentric mother’s stories about killer unicorns. But when one of the monsters attacks her boyfriend in the woods – thereby ruining any chance of him taking her to prom – Astrid learns that unicorns are real and dangerous, and she has a family legacy to uphold. Her mother packs her off to Rome to train as a unicorn hunter at the ancient cloisters the hunters have used for centuries.

However, at the cloisters, all is not what is seems. Outside, the unicorns wait to attack. And within, Astrid faces other, unexpected threats: from crumbling, bone-covered walls that vibrate with a terrible power to the hidden agendas of her fellow hunters to – perhaps most dangerously of all – her growing attraction to a handsome art student… and a relationship that could jeopardize everything.

How awesome is that? Killer unicorns! :D Here’s a teaser:

Now I wished I’d paid attentioned to Lilith all those years. Of course, if I had, I’d simply think that unicorns didn’t exist anymore, rather than that Mom was nuts and they’d never existed at all.

I can’t wait to know more about these unicorns. Killer unicorns, wohoo! :)

Teaser Tuesday: Oh. My. Gods. by Tera Lynn Childs

I finished my books too fast. That’s the thing with e-books, I finish them too fast. While I kind of miss actually flipping a book, I like the convenience of carrying a book in my iPod and reading it even in the dark. I’ll make a longer post on this next time.

I finished reading The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner (review to come soon), so I was suddenly at a loss at what to read next. Strange, since I have a ton of books that’s waiting — I always, always get that feeling. The feeling of having no book to read when I really have so much. Argh, I need to get over that.

But I digress.

Here’s a teaser of what I’m reading this week — Oh. My. Gods. by Tera Lynn Childs. :)

Oh. My. Gods. by Tera Lynn ChildsWhen Phoebe’s mom returns from Greece with a new husband and plans to move to an island in the Aegean Sea, Phoebe’s well-plotted senior year becomes ancient history. Now, instead of enjoying a triumphant track season and planning for college with her best friends, Phoebe is trying to keep her head above water at the überexclusive Academy. If it isn’t hard enough being the new kid in school, Phoebe’s classmates are all descendants of the Greek gods! When you’re running against teammates with superpowers, dealing with a stepsister from Hades, and nursing a crush on a boy who is quite literally a god, the drama takes on mythic proportions!

My friend Grace told me this is good, and frankly, I’m kind of tired of reading about dark vampires and fallen angels and all that. I kind of need something light — and this seem like a good one. Here’s a teaser:

I reach up and tighten my ponytail. My hair only has two styles: ponytail and down. Ponytail for running. Down for school. (p. 158)

Interesting. The character runs. I’ve been running a lot lately, too.  I think I’ll like this book. :)

Teaser Tuesday: Shades of Grey by Jasper Fforde

I just realized that I have had this book since January, got haunted by it, and blogged about getting it, but still haven’t read it. Crazy, huh? I wasn’t saving it for any special occasion, nor was I saving it to be read after I read a particularly boring book (or at least, a book that I don’t feel like reading). I didn’t feel like reading it yet because it’s too big to bring around. It doesn’t fit in any of my bags — and it’s already (trade) paperback!

I know, what a lame reason.

But anyway, I’m reading it now, and it’s my entry for today’s Teaser Tuesday! Presenting Shades of Grey by Jasper Fforde!

Shades of Grey by Jasper FfordeIt’s Britain, but not as we know it. Entire cities lie buried beneath moorland. Echoes of lost technology pepper the landscape, and there is evidence of conflict in abundance.

Democracy has been replaced by a Colourtocracy. Visual colour dominates society, from the feed-pipes that keep the municipal park green, to the healing hues you view to cure illness, to a social hierarchy based upon one’s limited colour vision. You are what you can see.

Eddie Russett has no ambition to be anything other than a loyal drone of the collective. With his better-than-average Red perception, he could marry an Oxblood, inherit the Stringworks, maybe even make Prefect.

Life looks colorful. Life looks good.

But then he moves to East Carmine and falls in love with a Grey named Jane who opens his eyes to the painful truth behind his seemingly perfect society.

Where have all the spoons gone?

What happened to all the people who never returned from High Saffron?

And why, when you begin to question the world around you, do black and white certainties reduce themselves to shades of grey?

The blurb alone is exciting, and I’m really psyched to keep on reading it. :P If I could get work out of the way…hmm. Oh, wait, here’s the teaser:

I awoke with a start to find my bedclothes in disarray. I had slept badly, waking at every tiny sound that might, to my fuddled mind, have been a threat. (p. 352)

Exciting, I tell you. Now I better start working so I can free up some time later to read. ;)

Teaser Tuesday: Going Too Far by Jennifer Echols

I finished Graceling (Kristin Cashore) yesterday and I was blown away (review to follow soon!). I usually take a break from reading whenever I finish reading a really good book, but my TBR stack kind of intimidates me so I just have to pick another one again.

So here’s this week’s Teaser Tuesday (I’m on time now, see :p): Going Too Far by Jennifer Echols.

Going Too Far by Jennifer EcholsHow far would you go?

All Meg has ever wanted is to get away. Away from high school. Away from her backwater town. Away from her parents who seem determined to keep her imprisoned in their dead-end lives. But one crazy evening involving a dare and forbidden railroad tracks, she goes way too far… and almost doesn’t make it back.
John made a choice to stay. To enforce the rules. To serve and protect. He has nothing but contempt for what he sees as childish rebellion, and he wants to teach Meg a lesson she won’t soon forget. But Meg pushes him to the limit by questioning everything he learned at the police academy. And when he pushes back, demanding to know why she won’t be tied down, they will drive each other to the edge – and over…

I got this book after a lot of recommendations from book bloggers I follow, plus it has very nice ratings in Goodreads. I’m kind of wary about reading books from MTV, and impulse buys because I had bad experiences. But nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?

And here’s the teaser!

But he was a frightened horse about to bolt. He wore that expression he tended to wear when I get too close to him, the oh-my-God-she’s-trying-to-seduce-me-and-I-don’t-like-it look. (p. 70)

That doesn’t really tell me what’s in the book…but I’m going to trust all the reviews and hope this is a really good book. :D

Okay, off to lunch!
